The south side is getting a new trail. The S. College Mall corridor added four distinct options in roughly eighteen months. A locally owned Mexican-fusion concept opened in April. A family-run Latin American spot has been serving Venezuelan and Colombian dishes since late 2023 to a neighborhood that is still treating it as a discovery. And the B-Line Trail, which connects this side of town to the rest of the city, is heading into a summer with three planned closure windows that anyone who runs or bikes it regularly should know about now.

The newest addition to the corridor is Bubbakoo's Burritos, a Mexican-fusion fast-casual concept that opened on April 23, 2026, owned and operated by a local entrepreneur who has been part of the Bloomington community for more than a decade. The menu runs burritos, bowls, and tacos with a current limited-time lineup that includes a birria crunch stack served with consommé for dipping and a plant-based chorizo that can go into any order.
Location matters here in a specific way. Bubbakoo's sits at 917 S. College Mall Rd. Smoothie King is at 925, a few doors down. Dave & Buster's is at 731, a short walk west. Three distinct stops have arrived on roughly half a mile of road in the past year and a half. For Hyde Park residents, that means the math on a weeknight dinner has changed: you can eat, grab something for the morning, and find something to do after, all without leaving the east side.
The Breakfast Spot That Has Been Open Since 2023 and Still Surprises People
Vivencia Latin Flavors at 2800 E. Buick Cadillac Blvd opened in late 2023 and runs seven days a week starting at 7 a.m. The kitchen covers Mexican, Colombian, and Venezuelan cooking in a way nothing else on the east side matches. The menu has range that rewards multiple visits:
- Cachapas and arepas alongside conventional brunch plates
- Chorizo skillet
- Beef tex-mex with yucca fries as a savory alternative to the standard sides
- Outdoor seating that works well through the summer months
That a family-owned restaurant has been running for nearly three years while many Hyde Park residents still hear about it as though it just opened says something true about how east-side openings move through word of mouth. Downtown openings get written up. East-side openings get discovered by accident. Vivencia is the clearest version of that pattern on this side of town, and it is worth correcting intentionally rather than waiting for someone to mention it at the right moment.
Dave & Buster's Changed What an East Side Evening Can Look Like
Before Dave & Buster's opened at 731 S. College Mall Rd, the corridor's logic was essentially: arrive for dinner, leave when the restaurants close. A 25,000-square-foot facility with more than 100 arcade games and a sports bar anchored by a 40-foot high-definition screen shifts that equation. There is now a reason to stay east past 9 p.m.

Dinner at Vivencia or Bubbakoo's, then two hours at Dave & Buster's, covers a full Friday evening without treating downtown as the necessary destination. The B-Line Trail This Summer: Three Closures Worth Knowing in Advance
The B-Line Trail extended to 3.2 miles in December 2025 when a new 0.1-mile section connected the trailhead at North Adams Street with the multi-use path along West Fountain Drive. Combined with the Bloomington Rail Trail at the south end, the connected route now runs 5.1 miles from Adams Street to well south of Country Club Drive. The trail is lit with LED fixtures from dusk to dawn and includes fitness stations between First Street and Grimes Lane.
This summer, that route will have three planned interruptions. The City of Bloomington is beginning work in the first week of June on the $6.3 million West 2nd Street Modernization and Safety Improvement Project, which crosses the trail. The construction schedule calls for closures at that crossing on the following schedule:

The project is also worth understanding in context. Once complete, West 2nd Street gets a two-way protected bicycle lane connecting the B-Line to the multi-use path at Walker Street, replaced traffic signals, and accessible boarding bus stops. The construction inconvenience is short-term. What it builds toward is a more connected east-west route for the people who use this side of town on foot and by bike.
The east side of Bloomington has been building infrastructure, dining options, and evening anchors at a pace that has outrun most residents' awareness of it. Hyde Park sits at the middle of that shift. The routine that made sense two years ago, the one that routes most evenings through downtown by default, is now competing against a corridor that has earned a second look.
